On Friday night, Rita Elias, 31, died after off-duty sheriff's detective Kari Abbey, shot and killed her after an hour long argument. Kari Abbey, a 6 year veteran to the force, and a detective of four years, was at an apartment complex owned by her parents. She got into an argument with Elias after the woman became (rightly so) angry after being served with an eviction notice. It appears that the Abbeys own the apartment complex in which Elias was living.
After about an hour of arguing, witnesses reported hearing several shots. According to ABC News 10, the pair even broke into a fist fight at one point. This begs the question, if a heated argument raged for an hour, why didn't the Detective call the police - being that's something that the cops themselves tells us to do in situations like these. The Sheriff's Department contends that Elias had a gun, and that Abbey shot and killed her because she feared for her life. Elias family however, "...disputed investigators' assertion that she was brandishing a gun when she was shot."
As one commenter on the Modesto Bee site wrote: "The officers father owns the property where the shooting occurred. If you rent from this man and he comes to collect the rent or post an eviction, be cautious, his daughter may shoot you if she feels her life is in danger even if she is ILLEGALLY trespassing."
Another shooting death in a city already reeling from the murder of Francisco Moran, who was killed after police lied about the 45 year old man welding a knife during a domestic call. The knife turned out to in fact be a wooden spoon. The Sheriff's Department is no stranger to blood on it's hands in recent months either. In the past year, 6 people have died in the Stanislaus County Jail, half, admittedly on the part of the Department, due to run ins with police tasers. Half of the families of those who have died in the jail are suing the Department, costing cash strapped tax payers in Stanislaus millions of dollars. Alfred Huskey also further embarrassed the Department in the past year, after he was found guilty of molesting and raping his step-daughter from an early age. Disgustingly, Huskey only received a year in jail and does not have to register as a sex offender.
Several things are for sure. The Modesto Bee and other mainstream media will continue to toe the line of the police. We'll have to go out and talk to other people if we want to know the truth. The police will, continue, to, lie. Lastly, the courts and the legal system will always favor the police. It is in our streets and communities, and the degree that we have control over them - against the government, anti-social elements, and the wealthy, that we will find justice.
Rita was my very loved chidhood friend, she didnt deserve this death. Tell my the sheriffs department hasnt said anything about the investigation, sure if it was one of them it wouldve already been settle. How unprofessional can a detective be , when she has to sit there for over an hour and argue with Rita. She is a PEACE OFFICER for real, do something legal not shot to kill, because thats exactly what the cocky bitch did, she killed my friend, someone mom and daughter. I hope you live with this and thou I know you dont care...I hope Modeto Sheriff's Department do the right thing, and stop covering each other, have morals dignity and most of all INTEGRITY..I love Modesto, but oh wooow, at time like this I dont believe in the sytem.RIP RITA..JUSTICE WILL BE MADE
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting!
ReplyDeleteThere's going to be a protest demonstration aganist this murder on Thursday in West Side. On the corner of Paradise and MLK Bld, 6pm.
Come out!
Just a thought, shouldnt the Sheriff department have the common curtesy to help the family with funeral expense..?? Or that Abby family? Wait ..what am I talking about, heartless murders and a very corrupt system. Not to worry MODESTO SHERIFFS OR ABBY FAMILY..there is such a thing as GOOD PEOPLE out there.Join the car wash & help raise for RITA ELIAS FUNERAL..thanks alot county sheriffs, go by and dnt even bother to donate $$, use it and buy some proper training, lol..thanks MODESTO ANARCHO
ReplyDeleteits sad how cops kill innocents and the law dont punish them, but if its any resident the one that kills another theyll be punished quick and lock them up for life or even killed. shouldnt cops be punished for the same reason ?
ReplyDeleteNo where has it been stated that the detective served an eviction notice. Even if she had why would Rita be rightly mad? If she hadn't paid her rent and eviction had been ordered, she is in the wrong. No where has it been stated that there was anything other than a verbal confrontation. A verbal confrontation is no cause to call police. A landlord, or a landlord's agent, is NOT ILLEGAL TRESPASSING if they are there collecting a debt. Rita's family is only saying "oh she didn't have a gun because we say so," They were not on the scene. The bottom line is that Rita tried to intimidate someone with a realistic looking BB gun and anyone would have done what this detective did if they were in the same position. You all are supposed to be anarchists for f- sake. Do you have a job in America? Even one that is illegal or under the table. YOU are a CAPITALIST.
ReplyDeletePolice always say that the people they murder had a gun. Francisco Moran's turned out to be a wooden spoon. How do we know that what the Sheriff's are saying is true. Even if Rita had a BB gun on here, how do we know she pulled it out on a police officer after an hour long argument?
ReplyDeleteYou're a capitalist if you own something and have other people work for you. We're workers, we have jobs, and get paid in wages. Most people survive in this manner.
Why is Rita the aggressor for standing up to a cop trying to evict people (if that's even what happened) but the cop isn't, for helping their landlord parents kick people out on the street.
This was not an argument between an officer and a suspect. Detective Kari Abbey was on personal business. She was an angry woman having a heated argument with another woman. Abbey should have been arrested and carted off to jail. The sheriff should have stayed out of this since this had absolutely nothing to do with any criminal activity. At the least, Abbey should have been charged with voluntary manslaughter. However, since she did go after her concealed weapon, that makes this case more of premeditated murder.
ReplyDeleteThere was no court record of any eviction notice on file. This was not about rent.

Demand justice for Rita Elias, a woman who was shot in cold blood by Kerri Abbey. We demand a transparent investigation into the corruption of the MPD and Sheriff Dept. Are you tired of cops getting a slap on the wrist for crimes that would get the rest of us locked up for a very long time?
Not just them the whole Damn County Seed!!!
ReplyDeleteI am tired of cops rating the public out when someone calls or emails about a drug house in the area or a Gang in your area Harassing the neighborhood! this is Crap!!!!!! Hang that Bitch!!!
ReplyDeleteOur Crooked County needs to Shut Down!!!!!! lock them up!!!!! The public does not feel safety here! makes me sick when I read a about a grant proposal when they want more money! for what! they have money... use your damn drug money!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou guys are lawless freaks of nature. Rita was HIGH on meth and had a gun. Now that everyone knows the band wagon has left the station I see people aren't so fast to jump up and scream give the Elias family money. The state and the Abbey's will never have to pay for the actions of a strung out meth head. If you all knew Rita so well how did you not know that?!?! And to the person that said hang that bitch I have a better idea, drop your meth pipe and get a job because meth heads and drug dealers always get caught and you are no exception. Just an update since this page seems so old, Judge ruled JUSTIFIED killing
ReplyDeleteSupport those that defend themselves against crooked cops! RIP RITA!
ReplyDeleteit never sees to amaze me the pethetic people who voice their pathetic comments. police Brutality has become a bigger problem then people care to realize.. People are so self involved that they close their eyes and ears to what is happening around them. Police are using their authority and abusing it. They are called "PEACE OFFICERS" In any case a drug addict, a parolee ect are still a human life. They are still peoples loved ones and they still have rights!!!!! Even MURDERS are given a trail before execution. And anyone that thinks its ok for a Policce officer to KILL because they THINK they have the power to do so, then may God bless you and your heart. IT DONT HIT HOME UNTILL IT HITS YOUR HOME!!!!!! and god forbid it does, but only then as BLIND as you are will you finally see.. THINGS will change, LAWS will change... because WE united the strong army WE are becoming will never stop till it does. And the more loved ones they MURDER the bigger and stronger OUR army will become!!!!!!!! REYNA DUENEZ
