Class Warfare in Modesto Continues - What Side Are You On?

Another inmate has died at the Stanislaus County jail, but our count, the 4th person in a matter of months at the facility. Others have died at the hands of the guards due to tasers.

Meanwhile, while police use of taser weapons kill inside and outside the jails, the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) is working with the police to put on a forum to allow the police the chance to explain why and how they use tasers. This benefits only the cops, as it gives them an opportunity to face criticism from the community but at the same time face no real consequences from it. It is in the streets, workplaces, and our communities, fighting back, that we gain power, not on our knees in front of those that would just as soon shoot us dead.

Meanwhile, as the carrot on Obama's stick starts to rot, the rich and elite in Stanislaus County are hoping to raise co-payments for the poorest among us. According to the Modesto Bee:

The Western Center on Law & Poverty is taking a dim view of the cuts to Stanislaus County's indigent health program, which has been a safety net for the poor and people who have lost jobs during the recession. "This is one of the worst examples we have heard of," said attorney Katie Murphy of the nonprofit center, which is involved in indigent health care lawsuits in San Diego, Fresno, San Francisco and Sacramento counties. The county has been reducing social services to keep pace with a slowdown in tax receipts and a drop in property values because of the recession and the region's foreclosure crisis. Patients whose co-pays were as low as $3 are now expected to pay up to $574 a month when they see a doctor, need medication or require other treatment.

They took your home. They took your job. They police you. Beat you. Taser you. Jail you. Now they pull the plug by your bedside.

Meanwhile, the schools such as those in the Modesto City District continue to be another battle ground, as workers and bosses square off. Those in charge find it hard to cut their own pay and jobs but so easy to cut ours. When we will stop talking with these people and asking them nicely to stop?

The rich will only be defeated when they are running for their lives.

California Valley Miwok Tribe Occupation Success - Eviction Called off for 30 Days

This just in, lawyers for the California Valley Miwok Tribe have just notified us that the bank has buckled and granted the tribe another 30 days to pay their bills - thus stalling the eviction. Local sheriffs have thus announced that they will not be evicting the house. Thus, large scale public resistance to the eviction of a foreclosed home in the center of the foreclosure crisis has been a success. The struggle is not yet over. In 30 days, we may need to occupy again, but for now, we have won.

SOLIDARITY WITH THE MIWOKS!
FREE THE LAND!
OCCUPY EVERYTHING!

From Like Lost Children blog

"We will not budge and are willing to die... Everything has been taken. This is the last."
-Silvia Burley, CVMT chairperson

"Don't talk about it, be about it."
-Mos Def

Anarchists and indigenous activists from the Bay, Central Valley, Santa Cruz and Canada have gathered at a foreclosed house in Stockton which is the only property belonging to the California Valley Miwok Tribe. It's an hour and a half into the second announced eviction date (the first was in June and sheriffs were held off by a lawsuit). The contest over the house is part of a struggle over the legal identity of the CVMT. It is also one of the first eviction resistances attempted in the U.S. since the housing market crashed, and it is happening in Stockton, CA which has been the #1 city in the U.S. for foreclosures the past 3 years running. (The Central Valley in general has been exceptionally hard hit by the foreclosure crisis.)

The CVMT has existed as a federally recognized tribe (i.e., technically a part of the federal government) since 1915. The tribe existed as a mere formality, without organization or land, until the late 1970s when Silvia Burley and a number of other young activists inspired by the burgeoning indigenous movement of those years began the process of building an actual tribal government organization which can obtain and disburse federal funds and other services. It has been a long slow process but the CVMT has managed to obtain food, housing, environmental protection and other aid for some of its members.

In the past few years, the tribe's funding stream has been frozen. A development corporation which owns a chain of casinos in Nevada and major housing development concerns in California has hired a front group of thugs and assorted scumbags to intimidate the existing tribal members and take control of the tribal government, with the goal of building a casino. Casinos represent the most crude monetization of the land rights and sovereignty that tribal governments represent. It's also worth noting that four major "gaming tribes" in southern California hog most of the federal funds available to the state's 108 recognized tribes (many of which are landless).

There is a very long story here about the BIA, the developer, and the various connections between businesses and government agencies involved. (see the CVMT website) The point that really resonates here though, is that a group of people are drawing a line and standing their ground against the forces of capital. Our homes, our futures, and our lives will not be taken away without resistance. We are not few enough to be easily pried apart. Today, anarchists resisting foreclosure will stand with indigenous people resisting disconnection from their territory. And tomorrow? The occupants of this house are prepared to keep out the sheriffs, the developers' thugs and anyone else that tries to fuck with us. If the house can be held until Feb. 9 there is a court date which may release funds to the tribe and save the house, so it would be concretely really helpful for more people to join the resisters here. It would also be awesome if more people started occupying foreclosed houses, resisting eviction, and occupying fucking everything.

We are starting again... CALI WHAT!

Eric McDavid in Prison for 4 Years

Dear friends,

Today marks the fourth year of Eric's incarceration. These are not the kind of milestones we would like to be writing about to you. While other people have been celebrating the New Year, we have been incredibly conscious of the passage of time in an entirely different way. For four years, New Years has served as a reminder to us – as it probably does to millions of others - of how long we have been separated from our loved one. While others are celebrating new beginnings, we are faced with the reality that, so far, there has been no new beginning as far as Eric's physical freedom is concerned. Some things remain painfully the same. Eric is still locked away by the state.

Please remember that this time of year can be particularly difficult for folks who are locked up. Take a minute to write Eric – or another political prisoner – and let them know that folks on the outside are still thinking of them and supporting them.

Appeal Update
------------------
Unfortunately, there's not a lot of news about the appeal. The government's response to Eric's opening brief is currently due on Feb. 1 (they've now asked for two extensions). We will let you know as soon as we hear anything more. Once the government files their response, Eric's lawyer will have two weeks to file his final response (more potential extensions notwithstanding ). Once everything is filed it could be more than a year before a decision is made.

How to Help
------------
We recently added a PayPal button to Eric's website (again). You can find it on the “Help” page: http://www.supporteric.org/howtohelp.htm Please consider making a donation to Eric's support fund. Currently the majority of these funds are being used to help his partner cover the costs of going to visit him. These visits are incredibly important to Eric and his partner and are imperative for maintaining everyone's sanity. They would not be possible without all of the support that Eric has received. Our sincerest thanks to everyone who has donated in the past. If you would like to donate but would prefer not to use PayPal, please let us know and we will send you the details about who to make the check out to and where to send it.

If you cannot donate money, there are other ways you can help. Eric is locked away from his loved ones and his communities and he doesn't have access to a lot of information. Receiving news from the outside helps him feel a little more connected to the issues he cares about. If you run across a good article from an independent media source that you think Eric might like, please send it his way. Just keep in mind that Eric is still in the appeals process, and everything he receives is read by the authorities. Even unsolicited mail can result in sanctions against prisoners. Be prudent with your choice of material.

Our thanks to everyone for all of your support these last 4 years.

Yours,
Eric's Support Crew

Report Back from BIA Picket

Protest at the John Moss Federal Building

from dq unversity

January 6/7th, 2010 - JOHN MOSS FEDERAL BLDG, SACRAMENTO, CA -
The California Valley Miwok Tribe (located at 10601 Escondido Place, Stockton, CA 95212) held a two day protest at the John Moss Federal Building - located at 650 Capital Mall, Sacramento, CA. This building houses the Central California Agency of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The Superintendent in charge, Troy Burdick, is responsible for initiating all actions on behalf of the government in working with non-Indian, non-tribal members and powerful and politically connected developers to drive this sovereign tribe and its proud people into financial oblivion to be able to then seize the Tribe's inherent sovereign rights and exploit those rights for their own financial gain.

Due to the nefarious actions of developer-sponsored individuals and also officials within the BIA, the Tribe, is now facing a second threat of eviction on January 15th. One West Bank whom holds title to the tribal property, has patiently waited these long seven months in utter amazement that the federal government has been unable or unwilling to rectify the situation that they themselves have created. The bank now feels that they have no other alternative but to move forward with the proposed eviction.

This new and much more dire situation has not gone unnoticed by the community. The Tribe now has an abundance of organizations and supporters that came together to host and attend an event that not only addressed the disdain felt by all against Interior officials' ineptness but by their criminality against the California Valley Miwok Tribe and her people. The BIA/DOI has so violated the very existence of this Tribe that now it has come down to the question of violations against the members' very civil rights, but now with all the positive energy flowing, this proud tribal nation's search for Justice shall not be thwarted. Being supported by righteous organizations that fight for the betterment of all the peoples whom they represent and now all coming together for one cause. It is truly a strong and positive period in time in this Tribal people's history. This event is just the beginning and it was enhanced even further by the negative presence of the criminal factions attempt to also be there huddled in a little out of the way corner on the federal buildings grounds.

Many new supporters were made and existing relationships strengthened just by these individuals exposing whom they really are. They were so transparent that all whom came to attend in a good way could see their true nefarious and criminal intent. So we thank them also, for it strengthened the spirit and righteousness of the protest.

The winds of change are upon us and a positive river of support is now fully flowing in the Tribe's direction and as the writer of this article I will not taint this now positive force bestowed upon us by the Great Creator by even the mentioning of any of their names for fear of bringing forth the negativity of these criminals that if given the opportunity would steal the identity of this proud tribe so that they and their developer may have a casino that they have no right to.

We would like to thank the creator for giving us the strength to fight for these so many years, for the representation that has now come to assist the Tribe in acquiring legal justice, to all of the individuals who came forth to support the Tribe and to all of the organizations listed below that have assured the Tribe that they shall stand strong with us and that we shall endure.

Banner Drops at UC Davis

In the context of a rally and march in protest of the 32% fee increase implemented by the UC Regents and the UC’s unfair labor practices, protesters hung two large banners from the rooftop of UCD’s main library, Peter J. Shields, at noon today.

The banners announced, “We are the crisis” and “Our education, our workplace, our university,” to highlight the connections between the struggles of UC’s students, faculty, and staff members. The message of the banner hang is to show that, at the beginning of the new quarter in which students are being required to pay 15% more in fees for their education (with an additional 17% fee increase set to occur in Fall 2010), the resistance to the UC administration’s decision-making is alive and mounting.

The action today is also a precursor to mobilize protestors for the statewide day of action against the privatization of public education on March 4th.

Shields Library was chosen as a target for these banners because of the chronic underfunding of UCD library collections, staff, and resources. For example, 17 fewer librarians were employed at Shields in 2006-2007 than in 1991-1992.* The library is one site of the larger struggle to reclaim rapidly diminishing student spaces on campus.

Banner Drop in Modesto in Support of Needle Exchange

From www.indybay.org:

"Kristy & Brian are scheduled to be in a Modesto court this coming Feb. 1rst @ 1:30 pm. A Rally is scheduled for noon. A judge will determine that day whether a "Medical Defense Necessity" will be used for their defense. March 1rst they start Trial! Off the Streets Project was spawned out of this repression. It's a syringe & safe disposal clean-up crew of individuals. Recently 60 syringes were cleaned up in the Airport District around Mono Park where Modesto Needle Exchange ran it's unauthorized & self-organized exchange back in April 2009, before it was shut down. The following Monday at court, a 3 year stay away order was issued to both defendants, 3 years probation, & one defendant, 30 days in county jail. Sound fishy? Hmmmm... In the meantime, up to this point, the Harm Reduction Coalition (Oakland Ca,) has been on board, literally letters from all over the world came in supporting dropping the charges against the two, court after court appearance were made, & an alliance of loyal supporters have joined Kristy & Brian in support. Stand with them Feb. 1. For more info, articles, & whatnot. Do a search in you engine on "Modesto Needle Exchange case".

Neo Nazis Participating in Sacto Gun Show

The latest National Alliance Membership Bulletin has a detailed cover story about the Sacramento unit’s recruiting activities at local gun shows. In the article, the unit leader, Jim Ring, brags about his success at signing up neo-Nazi’s at these events.

Antifa has learned that this notorious hate group intends to have several tables at the Cal Expo Center this weekend. Jim Ring has claimed to local racists that the show sponsor, McMann Roadrunner, is “sympathetic” to the National Alliance message. McMann ignores complaints from customers and vendors when the NA appears at their shows in California and Arizona, according to Ring, who brags that McMann gives him a discount for his tables and allows him to promote and sell copies of the “Turner Diaries” at the show.

This racist novel has been the “Bible” of right-wing domestic terrorist groups for thirty years. Oklahoma City bomber, Timothy McVeigh, used the book as his “blueprint” for the OKC bombing. According to the ADL, McVeigh himself used to sell copies of the Turner Diaries at gun shows in Arizona. Fifteen years later, Jim Ring continues to hawk this terrorist textbook to a new crop of budding extremists from his tables at the Cal Expo Center.

We need to shut this group down. Research suggests the National Alliance is on the ropes. Any efforts Antifa can make to prevent the NA from recruiting extremists and selling Nazi merchandise at local gun shows could have a serious impact on the income and growth of the group. The Sacramento crew claims they are one of the last remaining units in the organization. Reports claim the NA has less than one hundred dues-paying members and there are only a few places in the US where the hate group is even recruiting anymore.

Sacramento has literally become “ground zero” in our fight against these facists.

The local unit leader, Jim Ring, 56, works nights at the Grass Valley Kmart. He is one of the highest-ranking members of the National Alliance. In fact, Ring claims he was once in line to take over the organization. A self-proclaimed, life-long “National Socialist,” Ring told local members that he was offered the Alliance chairman’s position by Shaun Walker in 2006, after Walker’s arrest on federal civil rights charges.

Ring claims the current chairman, Erich Gliebe, seized the assets and property of the group and put his close friends on the NA board to protect himself from critics within the organization. Gliebe claims William Pierce picked him to run the National Alliance before he died. Ring claims this is a lie.

At a recent unit meeting, members said that Gliebe was running the Naitonal Alliance into the ground and Ring complained that Gliebe fails to ship him the racist books and propaganda he needs to promote the NA at Sacramento gun shows. Ring also complained to members that the chairman has failed to produce any new propaganda magazines or catalogs for years.

Despite these organizational intrigues, Jim Ring is a “company man” and will likely stay with the Alliance for the rest of his life, according to local unit members who know him well.

It is up to local Antifa to help Jim Ring have a change of heart.

What can we do?

A.) First, we can put pressure on local gun-show venues to ban any vendor that permits neo-Nazi recruitment or racist merchandise on their premises. The main gun show vendor in the region, McMann Roadrunner, has been repeatedly asked to prohibit the National Alliance from using their shows to recruit. The last time they were contacted they hung up on us. Call or write the company and express your outrage. We are organizing a phone bank to stress the company’s toll free number, 866-698-6591, with complaint calls this week. Please do your part and ring their phones off the hook. You can also call or fax their main numbers or send them an email:

McMann's Roadrunner
PO Box 5969
Glendale, AZ 85312-5969
Phone: (602) 843-5303
Fax: (602) 298-7111
Toll Free: (866) 698-6591
roadrunnershows@hotmail

B.) At the same time, pressure should be applied to the venue owner, Cal Expo Center. They have also ignored our calls and emails. Encourage local businesses to boycott Cal Expo. Alert local independent media and affinity groups to complain to the Cal Expo Center Board of Directors about neo-Nazi’s renting space in their facility.

C.) Visit the show this weekend and confront the racists. They will be there today and tomorrow. The National Alliance generally rents several tables along a wall at the Expo Center. There are plenty of photographs of the group’s display tables on Stormfront, where they brag about the “receptive audience” they find at these shows. Photos can be viewed here:

http://www.stormfront.org/forum/showthread.php?t=624799&page=75

This is a photo from the November gun show:

(Editor’s Note: Could someone at Indymedia make this image appear in the article? HTML tags don’t seem to be working. It may also be helpful to save the photo and download the image directly, in case the Nazi’s remove it from Stormfront.)

The Sacramento NA unit has more than a dozen active members. Help us identify and contact every one of them. Here is what we have on the three who showed up at the last gun show at the Expo Center:

Jim Ring
13648 Lupine Court
Penn Valley, CA, 95946
(215) 477-6719

Ring’s date of birth is Dec 14, 1953. He is the fat, older man with the sweater vest and glasses in the photo linked above. Ring claims he is a night manager at the Grass Valley Kmart. He complains about the problems the store has with “black and Mestizo shoplifters” and writes about Latino “border jumpers” on the National Alliance news site, where he is a contributor:

http://www.natallnews.com/story.php?id=8955

Ring also posts as “Legend” on the Resistance.com forum.

We have complained to Kmart about having a neo-Nazi in a supervisory roll over workers and customers of color at this store. They have ignored our calls and emails. Please contact the General Manager at the Grass Valley store and politely advise him of your intention to boycott his establishment:

Curt Hoisington
General Manager
K-Mart
111 West McNight Way
Grass Valley, CA 95949

Lynette Sonya Avrin
AKA “Lyn” “Lynette Moore”
6632 Chastain St.
Orangeville, CA, 95662
916-218-9468

Avrin’s date of birth is January 6, 1969. An active neo-Nazi for more than 10 years, Avrin is the brown-haired, middle-aged woman in the black sweater in the above photo. Going by the name “Freya14” on Stormfront since 2004, Avrin has made more than 16,000 posts on the racist forum. A major financial donor, she is listed as a “Lifetime” Friend of Stormfront and a Sustaining Member. Avrin, who will be 41 this week, has posted hundreds of photographs of herself and her two children in the photo threads on Stormfront. Until around October last year, Avrin lived in Lakewood, Colorado where she reportedly worked at the Denver VA Hospital. Currently unemployed, Avrin says she is a student working on her “associates degree in psychiatry.” She now lives with fellow National Alliance member Francis Drumm.

Francis Jeromy Drumm
AKA “Jeremy” “Richard Drumm”
6632 Chastain Drive
Orangeville, CA, 95662
916-987-2476
916-218-9468
916-996-3241

Francis Drumm goes by "Jeromy" in the local NA unit. His date of birth is August 10, 1971. He is also known to use the name Richard Drumm, according to his criminal record on file with the Sacramento County Superior Court. Drumm, 38, has a felony conviction for assault and battery and another conviction under PC 245 (A) (1). Claiming to be a journeyman plumber, Drumm goes by the names “BerzerCo” on line and uses the name “Palerider” on Stormfront. Drumm is not believed to be the man in the background on the right in the above photo. Drumm has posted dozens of photographs of himself and his wife and children on Stormfront. He claims he is in the middle of a divorce. Lynette Sonya Avrin has lived with Drumm for the past two months.

These three Nazi’s, Ring, Avrin and Drumm, seem to be the main organizers of the local National Alliance unit’s gun show outreach. They have been selling neo-Nazi merchandise and recruiting racists at gun shows in Sacramento for some time.

It is about time we made them stop.
